This week on Royal Reviews we will be looking back in time to have a little history lesson. The War of the Roses will be our topic and the focus of our reviews. Amy from Passage to the Past will have a couple of reviews for us, as well as me (Queen of Happy Endings) and Jen from Jenny Loves to Read. Up until a few months ago I didn't know a whole lot about the War of the Roses and the house of Lancaster and York. Well, I will certainly be checking back with you this week because I'm neck deep in research on Richard III for a chapter in my 3rd nonfiction book, ROYAL PAINS, and understanding all the twists and turns of the Wars of the Roses has been (a)tough sledding; and (b) quite an eye-opener. I thought I knew a lot, but evidently, too much of what I thought was at least only a fanciful bending of the truth was really Shakespeare!
I learned something neat just this afternoon about the Wars of the Roses: that they weren't called by that nickname until the 16th century (by that time they were over), and that during what we know as the Wars of the Roses, only the White Rose of York existed as an emblem. There wasn't a Red Rose of Lancaster that was any sort of official royal emblem at the time.
Who knew? I sure didn't!
