For Ava Whalen, a new marriage and a move to St. Simons Island means a new beginning. But what she doesn’t realize is that her marriage will take her on an unexpected journey into the deep recesses of her past that will transform her forever…

For as long as she can remember, Ava Whalen has struggled with a sense of not belonging, and now, at thirty-five, she still feels stymied by her family. Then she meets child psychologist Matthew Frazier, and thinks her days of loneliness are behind her. After a whirlwind romance, they impulsively elope, and Ava moves to Matthew’s ancestral home on St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia.

But after the initial excitement, Ava is surprised to discover that true happiness continues to elude her. There is much she doesn’t know about Matthew, including the mysterious circumstances surrounding his first wife’s death. And her new home seems to hold as many mysteries and secrets as her new husband. Feeling adrift, Ava throws herself into uncovering Matthew’s family history and that of the island, not realizing that she has a connection of her own to this place—or that her obsession with the past could very well destroy her future. (from the back of the book)

My Thoughts:

WOW! I loved this book! I simply could not get enough of it. In fact I read devoured it in less than two hours then felt the overwhelming urge to read it again!

When Ava Whalen marries Matthew Frazier, a man she just met, and moves to St. Simons Island she doesn’t understand why her mother refuses to accept her decision. Ava believes that she and Matthew were destined to be together although when she discovers that the Frazier family has many skeletons in their closet she starts questioning who Matthew really is.

Not only was Matthew previously married his wife died and according to his late wife’s family Matthew was to blame for her death. As Ava begins her search into the Frazier family, she begins to uncover the life of Pamela Frazier who lived in during the Revolutionary war and Ava realizes that there is a startling similarity to her memories and Pamela’s life.

However, ghost from the Frazier’s past are not the only thing that is being reveled and soon Ava discovers the reason for her mother’s hesitance.

I loved this book! The writing flowed off the page in perfect waves that drew me into the story and had me reading until the wee hours of the morn.

Told from three points of view (Pamela, Ava, and Gloria) Sea Change is a riveting tale of family and second chances. Marvelously composed and brilliantly told I found myself falling in love with the characters and wanting to know more of the story.

Occasionally when I read novels that are set in both the past and the present I find myself liking the story that is told in the past better than the present although in this novel I found that all three stories engaging.

While I thoroughly loved the characters, I was growing a bit tired of Matthew withholding the truth. I knew that he was innocent but his actions made him look suspicious and occasionally I found myself saying ‘just tell her already’.

I must say that Sea Change has been one of my all-time favorite novels! And I simply cannot wait to visit St. Simons Island.

A story about family and second chances sounds ideal. I like that it's told from different POVs. It'll mean I'll get a better understanding of everyone involved.
