securedownload Title: Once Upon a Tartan

Author: Grace Burrowes

ISBN: 978-1-4022-6869

How I read It: Mass-Market Arc from Publisher

Rating: 4.5 Crowns

HONOR OR HAPPINESS—HE CAN’T HAVE BOTH

Tiberius Flynn travels to Scotland with orders to snatch his young niece away from her Highland relations. He thinks it’s going to be an easy task, until he meets the feisty little girl and her fiercely protective step-aunt. A smart, headstrong beauty, Hester Daniels has no use for an English lord with high-handed ways, no matter how handsome or beguiling he may be…

Tye sets out to seduce Hester and win over Fiona, only to discover that he’s losing his heart to a woman who’s as untamable as Scotland itself… (from the back of the arc)

My Thoughts:

Grace Burrowes excels when she mixes family sagas and tender, heartwarming romance.

In Once Upon a Tartan

Tye arrives in Scotland with the intentions of kidnapping his deceased brother’s only child and bringing her back to be raised by his father. Yet when he finds his young niece, Fiona, singing in a tree, he realizes it isn’t going to be as easy as he planned. To further complicate the matter, Tye seems to be falling for Hester Daniels, Fiona’s step aunt.

Torn between what he has promised his father and what his heart wants, Tye finds himself in a complicated situation.

Having read The Bridegroom Wore Plaid, I was eager to read the next installment of The MacGregor Trilogy. If you have The Bridegroom Wore Plaid, some of the characters will be familiar to you, although if you haven’t read it, Once Upon a Tartan reads as a standalone and all that you need to know will be revealed.

Even though Tye came with the intentions of snatching his niece, I found him endearing. You could see that he was fighting an inner war between what was right to do and he was bound by honor to do. Some of his actions were shocking, and while I knew that it was going to happen, I was a hoping it wouldn’t.

Hester was likable. She was also relatable. She found herself being attracted to Tye yet she fought it because in her eyes he was the enemy for wanting to take Fiona away from the only home she ever knew. Events in Hester’s past also made me like her.

While this was Tye and Hester’s story, Grace Burrowes’ intertwined updates from Lord and Lady Balfour, which I loved considering that they were the hero and heroine from the The Bridegroom Wore Plaid. I know that I have said it many times before, but the novel comes alive when the author adds a child to the story, and Fiona truly brightened up this book.

The plot was brilliantly paced with twists and turns in just the right spots to make the book one that you do not want to put down.

Overall, this was a very sensual read laced with chemistry and charisma.

I've read a few of Grace's books and they don't disappoint. They remind me a little of the older historicals in that the couple and the world is so filling.
