Checkmate, My Lord by Tracey Devlyn

9781402258251 The Stakes Are High, The Players in Position...

Catherine Ashcroft leads a quiet life caring for her precocious seven-year-old daughter, until a late-night visitor delivers a startling ultimatum. She will match wits with the enigmatic Earl of Somerton, and it's not just her heart that's in danger.

Let the Games Begin...

Spymaster Sebastian Danvers, Earl of Somerton, is famous for his cunning. Few can outwit him and even fewer dare challenge him-until now. After returning to his country estate, his no-nonsense neighbor turns her seductive wiles on him- but why would a respectable widow like Catherine risk scandal for a few passionate nights in his bed?

Book Details: Title: Checkmate, My Lord, Author: Tracey Devlyn, ISBN:978-4022-5825-1, Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca, $6.99, Rating: 4.5 Crowns

My Thoughts:

After discovering letters written by her late husband, Catherine Ashcroft goes strait to the man mentioned in some of them, Sebastian Danvers, Earl of Somerton.

Spymaster Sebastian Danvers is intrigued by the letters, perhaps they hold the clue as to who betrayed the Nexus. However, he is not about to divulge that he is a spy to Catherine no matter how attracted to her he is.

When Catherine’s young daughter is placed in danger both Sebastian and Catherine will stop at nothing to protect her.

I have heard great things about Tracey Devlyn’s writing. People far and wide have been raving about her first novel in the Nexus Series, A Lady’s Revenge. So when Sourcebooks offered me a chance to review the second novel in the Nexus Series, Checkmate, My Lord, I jumped at the chance.

Starting off, I will say that when reading Checkmate, My Lord I felt that I was missing a few bits and bobs of the plot because I had not read the first in the series, A Lady’s Revenge. Although I must say that this book so intriguing in its own right, I didn’t worry too much about not reading the first. I did however order the first book off Amazon.

Romance, danger, and intrigue are all among the pages of Checkmate, My Lord. I liked this book, okay, I lied, I LOVED this book. I could not put it down. Not only was I interested in the spy aspect of the novel, the romance was brilliant yet not too overly done.

Oh good to hear! I saw this one the other day and really liked the idea behind it. I haven't read her either though or book one so hadn't grabbed this one up. Glad it works fairly well as a stand alone :) Thanks for the review!
