Beautiful but broke student Polly and scheming social climber Alexa may have grown up in the same place, but they couldn’t be more different. Polly’s just fallen for Max, a handsome country vet. But Alexa can’t be bothered with love—any guy with a pedigree will do, mind you, as long as he comes with a title, a mansion, and a family tiara.

Alexa wiggles her way into friendship with Florrie, and clueless aristocrat who could support entire countries with her spare change. Suddenly the grandest doors wing open for Alexa, and a new life is so close she can taste it. Polly could care less about Max’s money, but his mysterious habit of disappearing scares her. What’s he hiding?

Razor sharp in its wit, and as fresh as newlywed royals, Marrying Up reveals how sometimes a rags-to-riches story can rip a girl to shreds—and how sometimes the rewards of love aren’t always what you expect. (from the back of the book)

My Thoughts:

The plot:

Broke-girl-meets-mysterious-man-who-turns-out-to-be-wealthy-prince-irritating-aristocrat-puts-a-spanner-works-then-all-goes-topsyturvy-when-an-annoying-social-climber-starts-scheming.

When the plot is summed up as such, one would believe that this book hold potential to be grand, and while I did enjoy the novel I felt that it did not live up to its potential. I loved Polly and Max and if the book would have stayed focused on them rather than veering off with characters so over the top that they become annoying it would have made for a good read. However, the other characters overshadowed the only enjoyable pair in the book, which ended up annoying me.

I will say that I enjoyed the book immensely until chapter 10 then things rapidly declined.

Overall, the book was an extremely light read that offered a bit of wit. If you can get past the maddening characters with outlandish names, you might find that you enjoy this read.

Have you read Marrying Up? If so, I would love to know what you think of the novel. If not, then this is your chance to win a copy.

Thanks for your great blog. I live in France so I do not often have opportunities to browse for books in an English bookshop. Your blog is a good way to keep up with new releases. I would be happy to give Wendy Holden's book a try. I don't remember having read anything by her so far.
