A Breath of Snow & Ashes by Diana Gabaldon

Copyright: 2005
Pages: 980

I don't usually think of Diana Gabaldon's books as big and I guess that is because they are such a pleasure to read that you just fly through them. However the 6th book in the series was slow to start and early on seemed huge. In the end though, I was not disappointed.

Claire and James Fraser have weathered more storms than most. They crossed oceans and centuries to make a life together. Claire made the voyage from peaceful 20th century Scotland to 18th century Scotland and total mayhem. Through these books we have watched their passion, love and friendship grow as a couple and throughout their married life they have experienced adventure, adversity and attempted to alter history. They finally settled in North Carolina along with their daughter Brianna, her husband Roger, their son Jemmie, and Jamie's nephew Ian.

Claire, now in her 50s, spends much of her time utilising her physician's skills and searching for ways to bring 20th century science to her 18th century practice. James is the founder of the Fraser's Ridge community and acts as an unofficial clan chief to the families who look to him for leadership. Brianna and Roger are a young couple coping with a heavy daily work load and parenting.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes opens in the year 1772 on the eve of the American Revolution. Jamie knows about the revolution to come because Claire has told him. Looming over the Frasers is the threat of a tiny newspaper clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which Claire discovered before returning to the 18th century. The article reports the destruction of the house on Fraser's Ridge, and the death by fire of James Fraser and all his family.

About the Author: Diana Gabaldon is the author of the award-winning, NYT-bestselling Outlander novels, described by Salon magazine as "the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written. Dr. Gabaldon holds three degrees in science: Zoology, Marine Biology, and Quantitative Behavioral Ecology. Diana is the author of many novels.

The next book in the series, An Echo in the Bone is due for release later in 2009. If you'd like to read an excerpt then follow this link.

As much as I love these books, sometimes there is a lot of filler! In this book there was, but then there were some truly amazing moments as well, so I will keep on reading! Can't wait for the next book which comes out in September!

Hi Marg, I agree they do have lots of filler and this one more than the others. Still, I can't wait for An Echo of the Bone to come out.

I love all the books and after I finished this one, I thought it was one of my favorites in the series. Though after 4 years, I'm looking back and realizing this was a tough read for me (but not as much as the Fiery Cross). There's a lot of "stuff" in this one that was hard to take, but I'd still take anything DG dishes out to Jamie and Claire just to be able to read about them! I'm eagerly waiting for the release of Echo too, it's hard to believe it's almost been 4 long years!

Hi Julie, a few people said Fiery Cross was the hardest to get through but I flew through it. Funny how we all have different views. But we all agree that we can't wait for the next one!

Oh goodness, I'm still working on the first one. I have all the books and will buy the next one too in the hopes that I one day get them read. Great review.

Thanks Dar, it is worth the time it takes to read them all. I'd had them all for a few years before I got to them as well. At least now I'm up to date. Now I have to get to the rest of the Sara Donati's series.

I read Outlander a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I would love to continue reading the series some day. Thanks for the wonderful review.

I actually found A Breath of Snow & Ashes one of the easier books of the series and I just loved the ending (I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't already read it!)It finished the book off very well but also left you wanting more.

I can't wait until the next book is released in September.
