I have decided to adopt a new theory and not judge an author I haven't previously read by one book alone. Especially when said author was considered one of the premier writers in the historical romance genre and one my Mum had an affection for. So I'm not saying I'll never read another Kathleen E. Woodiwiss novel but let's just say I won't be in a hurry....and it would have to come highly recommended.
Sadly, Woodiwiss passed away last year after battling long-term illness. Out of respect for her fans and the legacy of an author who was considered quite prolific, I don't feel comfortable going into too much detail about what I didn't enjoy about this novel. But briefly, I felt that it lacked depth from a too-convenient plotline and a flawless hero and heroine. While it was certainly lovely and feelgood, this particular novel wasn't really very memorable.
It probably also didn't help me warm to it that when the woman performing this audio spoke in the hero's voice, he came out sounding like a verrrrrrrrrry old dirty Scotsman. Not a very sexy burr at all. And not really how I imagined Raven Seaburn to sound.
On a positive note, the book had a fantastic cover. In fact, I think it has to be one of my all-time favourite historical genre covers. Oh and I love love loved the heroine's name Abrielle. I thought it was beautiful! Writing-wise Woodiwiss wove some interesting sub-plots and although they were predictable, I do feel she coloured the narrative well with them.
I didn't feel this novel was at the same standard as a Jude Deveraux historical however I'd still be willing to give her another go. Does anyone have some recommendations???
