Lady Jane Grey

The Streatham Portrait

Born:

1536/1537

Died:

12 February 1554 Tower of London

Father:

Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk

Mother:

Lady Francis Brandon

Spouse:

Lord Guildford Dudley

Title:

Queen of England and Ireland

Reign:

10 July 1553-19 July 1553 9 Days

Predecessor:

Edward VI

Successor:

Mary 1

Signature:

Janegreysig

1533

Draft of Succession:

220px-Edward_VI's_'devise_for_the_succession'

“My devise for the Succession” by Edward VI. This draft will was the basis for the letters patent which declared Lady Jane Grey successor to the Crown. In the fourth line, Edward changes “L Janes heires masles” to “L Jane and her heires masles”. By creating this ‘devise for the succession’ in 1553, which is written in his own hand, he bypassed the claims to the throne of his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth in favour of Lady Jane Dudley (nee Grey).

Letter that Jane wrote proclaiming herself Queen:

Interesting & Random Facts:

*Jane was the granddaughter of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon, as well as the great-granddaughter of Henry VII. Making her the niece of Henry VIII.

*She was a committed Protestant.

*She preferred books to hunting parties, and regarded her strict upbringing as harsh.

*February 1547 Jane was sent to live in the household of Thomas Seymour and remained there until after the death of Catherine Parr in September 1548.

*After a period of mourning, Thomas Seymour showed interest in marrying Jane and readmitted her into his household. Although nothing came of this as Thomas was arrested at the end of 1548.

*May 21, 1553 Jane married Lord Guilford Dudley, a younger son of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, in a triple wedding, in which her sister Catherine and Guilford’s sister Catherine married the Earl of Pembroke, Lord Herbert and Henry Hastings respectively.

*Once she was named Queen, she refused to name her husband king, instead she made him Duke of Clarence.

*Her reign was short lived and she soon found herself a guest of the Tower.

Thank you for the post! I love reading so much about the Tudor family! I think Lady Jane was queen only for 9 days, right? That was terrible!

Jane Grey is such an interesting historical character. There is so much duplicity and scheming surrounding her rise to the throne. I have read Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir and really liked her interpretation. The images you provided are great.

Please enter me for the giveaway.
