Historical Fiction Reading Challenge 2009

Welcome back all you history buffs! The Historical Fiction Reading Challenge is back for 2009 and this year it's bigger and better thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions. This challenge, previously hosted by Annie at Reading, Writing & Ranting will now by hosted here (Annie reviews under The Fussy Princess).


Many of you said you enjoyed the simplicity and flexibility of the last challenge but agreed it was probably too long. Some of you wanted a theme and others didn't. And most of you loved the Hotties of History Challenge Buttons :-)

So this is how it's going to work:


  • Read 3 historical fiction books in 3 months from 1st Jan 09 - 31st March 09.
  • Historical fiction will be counted as anything set or written prior to World War II. This will include classic novels, time travel novels or anything you feel fits the genre.

For an extra bit of fun, you can choose to participate in one of the following themes:

  • The Royal Twist - Read 3 based on or inspired by 3 different royals. Emporers, Queens, Kings whatever inspires you!
  • The Twilight Twist - Read a selection of 3 of the classic novels that inspired the Twilight Saga. There's Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte or A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare.

To join the challenge simply give your name to the comments section of this post.

This year, discussions will be held on a GoodReads Group. Anyone is more than welcome to join. Discussion promises to be varied and we can guarantee you'll end up with a few extra books on your TBR pile! Visit the group here.

There will also be giveaways associated with this challenge so keep your eyes pealed.

    I am definitely taking this on! It will dove-tail nicely with a couple of my other goals: To participate in Carl's Sci-Fi Experience by reading some time-travel novels, and to read the January book of the month for the historical fiction group at Paperback Swap.

    Count me in! I'm looking forward to choosing which books to read. One will be an ARC of Helen Hollick's The Kingmaking, #1 in her Arthurian trilogy and due to be published by Sourcebooks at the beginning of March.

    I run a challenge called National Just Read More Novels Month where the goal is to read at least one novel in the month of January. Historical fiction would be a great way of doing this.

    Thanks for the e-mail. I was searching Project Gutenberg for books for my other challenges and I was hoping that you would be holding it the full year as I think I came across at least 15 books that will fit in nicely with your challenge. Judy
